Caps pass on qualifying offer for Smith-Pelly

The Washington Capitals opted not to extend restricted free agent Devante Smith-Pelly a qualifying offer by Monday’s deadline to do so.Smith-Pelly, 26, will become an unrestricted free agent on Sunday. The right wing earned $650,000 last season.The Capitals are expected to continue negotiating a contract with Smith-Pelly, who is free to talk to other teams during the interview period prior to the start of free agency.Smith-Pelly posted modest numbers (seven goals, nine assists) during 75 regular-season games with the Capitals last season, but he proved extremely valuable in the playoffs as Washington won its first Stanley Cup title. Smith-Pelly had seven goals in 24 playoff games, including the game-tying tally in the decisive Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final.
