Devils’ Mirco Mueller, Switzerland take silver at World Championships; U.S. beats Canada for bronze

Switzerland, featuring Devils defenseman Mirco Mueller, took the silver medal at the 2018 IIHF World Championships with a 3-2 shootout loss to Sweden on Sunday in Copenhagen, Denmark.The United States, which featured Devils forwards Blake Coleman and Brian Gibbons, plus defenseman Will Butcher and goalie Keith Kinkaid, finished in third place following a 4-1 win over Canada in the bronze medal game.Former Devils defenseman Adam Larsson won gold with Sweden, and he was named to the tournament’s All-Star team.Switzerland saw two one-goal leads disappear in regulation, with Sweden forcing the game to to overtime tied 2-2. The teams remained tied 2-2 after a 20-minute overtime period of 4-on-4 hockey, and Sweden won the shootout, 3-2.Mueller played in all 10 games for Switzerland, where he finished with one goals and five assists for six points.Devils forward Nico Hischier did not participate for Switzerland at the World Championships due to a left wrist and hand injury.Devils’ biggest AHL surprisesSwitzerland made a surprise run to the final following a fourth-place finish in Group A during preliminary play. The Swiss beat Finland, the Group B winner, in the quarterfinals before beating Canada in the semifinals.
